What's the best Halloween candy this fall? We put seven new treats to the test

Erin Jensen, USA TODAYPublished

What if we lived in a world with no tricks and just treats?

That's the Willy Wonka-like wonderland we created at USA TODAY for 10 lucky participants tasked with ranking new Halloween and fall-themed goodies. Our lot included pumpkin and pumpkin spice-flavored goodies as well as the viral Cookies & Screeem M&M's.  Please remember MANY CHILDREN ARE ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS.

Here's how the delights stacked up:

1. Reese's Peanut Butter White Pumpkins

Suggested retail price for a standard size: $0.66

This pumpkin-shaped treat took the cake. Engulfing the candy's traditional peanut butter filling in a white crème coating proved to be a winning idea. One taste-tester wrote on their ballot, "It's official: I guess I'll eat any holiday-shaped Reese's cup."

2. Cadbury Harvest Mix Solid Milk Chocolates

Suggested retail price: $3.50 for 10 oz.

The spheres made of milk chocolate surrounded by a crunchy sugar candy shell come in autumnal hues like orange, red and yellow. One participant commented that these were "good, but nothing special" as they tasted "the same as (Cadbury Mini Eggs)."

3. Cookies & Screeem M&M's

Cost: $3.19 for 8 oz.

These black and white-speckled M&M's combine dark and white chocolate and were a hit prior to landing in Target stores (as an exclusive) earlier this month. Though the confection's novelty wasn't enough to take the top spot, third is a respectable place to be.

Halloween candy sales are projected to increase 5.5% this year, the strongest rise since 2011, and it's good news for the economy and for those with a sweet tooth. Sean Dowling (@seandowlingtv) has more. Buzz60

4. Maltesers

Cost: $4.86 for a 14.5 oz. bucket at Walmart

While this candy originated in the UK and has been available stateside since the spring, it's the first Halloween season that American trick-or-treaters can gorge on the sweet milk chocolate-covered candy with an airy malt ball. Preferences for the candy were scattered. Four participants put the candy in fourth place on their own surveys.

5. Pumpkin Spice Oreos

Cost: $2.99 for 10.7 oz.

This golden sandwich cookie with an orange center is another Target exclusive. A taster who put the treat in fifth place on their ballot suggested that even those without a PSL-preoccupation could enjoy the dessert. "Mild pumpkin," they remarked of the flavor, "which is good for non-pumpkin obsessed."

6. White Pumpkin Pie M&M's

Cost: $2.98 for 8 oz. at Walmart

The white chocolate M&M infused with pumpkin pie flavoring wasn't heavily favored among the group. However, one participant believed the treat deserved to be in first place. She was a fan of the "strong spice/pie flavor," adding it tasted "very fall!"

7. Brach's Football Candy Corn

Cost: $1.98 for 15 oz.

The consensus was that manufacturer fumbled when crafting the pigskin-shaped confectionery, available exclusively at Walmart. Eight of ten taste-testers ranked the item dead last.
